August 13, 1909 – March 19, 1970
Devota Helen Long Walls was born at Adair, Iowa, August 13, 1909, to parents Andy and Millie (Reed) Long. She moved with her parents, sisters and brothers to a farm south of Clarkfield, Minnesota, when she was one and one-half years old. She was baptized as a young girl into the Methodist faith by Rev. Held. On September 11, 1928, she was united in marriage with Elmer Walls. Her husband met with an untimely death four days before his son, Elmer, was born, leaving Devota with the task of raising him to manhood. She spent her entire life in the Clarkfield vicinity after her arrival from Iowa. She and her son made their home with her parents for several years and later with her sister and husband, Murvel and Everett Loomis. With them she resided until she entered the Clarkfield Community Hospital on March 4, 1970. She departed this life Wednesday, March 19, 1970, at 10:45 a.m. at the Clarkfield Community Hospital at the age of 60 years. Devota was a home-loving person with gardening and the care of her grandchildren, the two main hobbies of her life. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; one brother, Orville; and a niece. She leaves to mourn her passing, her son, Elmer; his wife, Dorothy; three grandchildren: Kari, Karla and Stacy Walls; two sisters: Pearl (Mrs. Henry Ernst), Murvel (Mrs. Everett Loomis) and two brothers: Melville and Boyd, all of the local community; and a host of nieces and nephews.
