Derrick Andrew Roy was born at Midway Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota, on April 5, 1983, to parents Richard T. Budge and Kimberly A. Roy. He was baptized in June of 1983 in White Bear Lake, Minnesota. He was raised in White Bear Lake and several other places before he moved to Boyd, Minnesota, when his mother married Bradley Koepp. He started Dawson-Boyd School in the fifth grade and graduated in 2001. Derrick was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Disease at age 13 and a relapse at age 14, which resulted in a bone marrow transplant. He attended Minnesota West Vocational School at Granite Falls, Minnesota, where he met his fiance Sarah Foren. Derrick and Sarah moved to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and he worked as a warehouse driver for John Morrell. He enjoyed life and added a member to his family, a Corgre dog named Kale. In May of 2006, Derrick was having trouble with his shoulder hurting and he couldn't work. Derrick and his mom went to the University of Minnesota Hospitals and ended up having a bone marrow biopsy, which confirmed AML (Leukemia). He had chemotherapy treatments in July and October of 2006 and February of 2007. The last treatment did not work and he was sent home. Derrick spent his last days on the farm with his family and his dog. Derrick passed away peacefully on Friday evening, June 15, 2007, at the Johnson Memorial Hospital in Dawson, Minnesota, at the age of 24 years, 2 months and 10 days with his family and his beloved dog, Kale, at his side. Derrick is survived by his family: his parents Kim and Brad Koepp of Boyd, Minnesota, and Rick and Cathy Budge of Woodbury, Minnesota; his fiance Sarah Foren of Browns Valley, Minnesota; and sister Lindsey at home. He is also survived by half-brothers Evan Budge and Alec Budge, both of Woodbury, Minnesota, and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. And, of course, his dog, Kale. He was preceded in death by his Grandparents: Sharon and Roger Oehlke, Herb and Flora Koepp and William Roy; and cousin Dennis Liberko.
