Delmar A. Varpness, 69, of Clarkfield, Minnesota, died September 20, 1989, at the Granite Falls Hospital, Granite Falls, Minnesota. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 23. 1989, at the Augustana Lutheran Church of Clarkfield. Officiating was Pastor Joyce Knorr. Organist was Mary Keopp and soloist was Diane Gregoire. Burial was in the St. Lucas Lutheran Church Cemetery of Normania Township, Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota. Military rites were by the American Legion J. Ben Johnson Post No. 169, Clarkfield, Minnesota. Serving as pallbearers were Floyd Beecher, Herbert Koepp, Juell Oakland, Arvid Severson, Elmer Soehren and Leslie Vien. Delmar was born March 10, 1920, in Vallers Township, Lyon County, Minnesota, to Dithloff and Amanda (Selness) Varpness. He was baptized in April of 1920 at St. Lucas Lutheran Church and confirmed May 27, 1934, by Rev. A. Haugland at Hazel Run Lutheran Church, Hazel Run, Minnesota. Delmar and Marian Irene Olson were united in marriage July 18, 1945, by Rev. P.O. Wee in Dawson, Minnesota, and to this union four sons were born, Duane, Jerry, Wesley and David. Delmar worked as a heavy equipment operator for Clarence Rodness and the Yellow Medicine County Highway Department and also various other jobs. He was a member of the Augustana Lutheran Church and the American Legion. Delmar served in the U.S. Army during WWII in Europe from July 20, 1942 to October 30, 1945. Delmar is survived by his wife, Marian of Clarkfield; and sons, Jerry of Newton, Kansas, Wesley of Canby, Minnesota, and David of Montevideo, Minnesota; his grandchildren; one sister, Alice Johnson of Boyd, Minnesota; one brother, Jimmie Varpness of Clarkfield; and aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Duane; his great grandson, Blake Wyfells; and his twin brothers. He will be sadly and deeply missed by his family and friends.
