Obituary

David Sylvester Johnson was born July 29, 1917, to Thomas and Regina (Hagen) Johnson in St. Paul, Minnesota. He passed away November 6, 1991, at Abbott Northwestern Hospital. Dave was baptized and confirmed at Evangelical United Methodist Church in Waseca, Minnesota. Dave graduated from Waseca High School in 1935 and received his degree from the University of Minnesota in Agronomy and Agricultural Economics in 1941. Upon Graduation from the University, he taught school in Freeborn, Minnesota. In 1943, he enlisted in the United States Navy going to Midshipmen School at Notre Dame University, South Bend, Indiana. He earned the rank of Lt. J.G. During his service he was assigned to amphibious units in the Pacific (Guam, Okinawa, the Phillipines). After the war, Dave returned to Albert Lea, Minnesota, where he taught Veteran's agriculture. On September 19, 1948, Dave married Margaret Elizabeth Connor at First Presbyterian Church of Albert Lea, Minnesota. From 1948 to 1955, Dave was the Farm Management Specialist, through the University of Minnesota Extension Service in Worthington, Minnesota. In 1955, Dave accepted the position of Agricultural Extension Agent in Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota, where he served the area until his retirement in 1983. For this he attained the rank of Associate Professor from the University of Minnesota. Dave was active in the community and church. He was a dedicated member of Augustana Lutheran Church serving as a Sunday School teacher, church council member and Synod delegate. He also served on the Minnesota Synod's American Missions Commission Board. Dave served on the local school board, was a past member and president of Lion's Club, past member of Clarkfield Civic and Commerce and a charter member of the Toastmaster's Club. Dave was involved in State and National County Agents Association where he recieved the Distinguished Service Award in 1967. He served on the board of the State 4-H foundation. Dave was also actively involved in the Yellow Medicine Historical Society. Following his heart surgery and retirement, he continued to give of his time to crop/hail adjusting, farm mediations, and was always happy to answer questions on gardening and horticulture. Dave was a strong educator encouraging young people "to make the best better" and further their education. Dave was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He is survived by his wife, Margaret. They had six children of whom Dave was very proud. Daughter, Mary Kay and Rev. Saul Stensvaag of Sapporo, Japan; Son, Kent and Sharon of Maple Grove, Minnesota; Son, Paul and Lisa of Ballwin, Missouri; Son, Charles and Karla of White Bear Lake, Minnesota; Daughter, Sara and Marc Illies of St. Cloud, Minnesota; and Son, Robert and Kim of Osseo, Minnesota. Also survived by 11 beautiful grandchildren: Maya, Ken, and Emma Stensvaag; Aaron and Brittney Johnson; Paul and Caroline Johnson; Alexander, Isaac, and Abby Rose Johnson; and Connor Illies. Dave was preceded in death by his parents.
