David Helmer Holtan, only son of Helmer and Clara (Sorum) Holtan of Clarkfield, Minnesota, was born on November 22, 1931. He was baptized in the Bergen Evangelical Lutheran Church by the late Rev. A. Haugland. He received his instructions for confirmation from Rev. A.N. Olson, and was confirmed by him December 9, 1945. Deceased attended the Clarkfield grade and High School. When he was taken ill, David was engaged in farming with his father. Always willing to take part in community activities, David was a member of the Bergen Lutheran choir, and secretary-treasurer of the Lisbon Township Farmers Union Local. He had proved himself to be a conscientious and dependable young man. In the summer of 1952, he was taken ill and upon the advice of his home physician was sent to specialists in Minneapolis. As a patient at the Deaconess Hospital he was given every medical care that science has to offer. But he was returned to his home in Lisbon with little hope held out by his doctors. His strength, faith and patience during his weeks of intense suffering were an inspiration to the relatives and friends who gathered around his bed. At 2:10 o'clock Tuesday morning November 4, 1952, he was called to the Beyond, aged 20 years, eleven months and 13 days. He leaves to mourn his untimely death, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Helmer Holtan; a sister, Dorothy (Mrs. John Zeigart) of Omaha, Nebraska; besides a large number of other relatives and friends.
