Obituary

Daniel O. Kirkeby was born February 9, 1876, to Martin and Karena (Borgeson) Kirkeby, in Lisbon Township, Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota. He was baptized in infancy and confirmed by Rev. Carl J. Moen. In June, 1915, he was united in marriage to Nellie Christine Eide, who made her home with the Martin Kirkeby family as her mother passed away when she was yet a small girl. Her parents were Mr. and Mrs. John Eide. This union was blessed with three children, namely Deloris, Warner and Rodger. Dan and his wife had lived twelve happy years together, when his wife passed away, January 12, 1927, leaving the three young children with the baby only four years old. On December 10, 1943, the only daughter, Deloris, passed away following a lingering illness. Dan was alone at this sad hour, too, as his son, Rodger, in the armed forces was serving in Australia at the time and Warner was serving on the Italian-African front, neither able to get a release to come home. As a young man, Dan homesteaded in North Dakota. After his marriage, the family lived at Browns Valley, Minnesota, where he operated a general store. They also lived at Montevideo, Fergus Falls, and Boyd. Dan worked as a clerk at the A. Grinager Store for over 20 years and retired from active work in 1943. He was a member of the Clarkfield Lutheran Church, active with the Clarkfield 'Booster Club' for which he acted as secretary for many years. He also served as town constable. Mr. Kirkeby passed away at the Clarkfield Community Hospital Wednesday evening, September 12, 1956, at the age of 78 years, seven months and three days. His health began to fail in the spring and since that time has been lovingly cared for at the home of his son, Rodger and wife, Franceil. He was stricken with a heart attack Wednesday evening and taken to the hospital where he died an hour later. He is survived by his sons, Warner of Redfield, South Dakota, and Rodger of Clarkfield; two daughters-in-law; and four grandchildren, namely, Steve and Jana, Michael and David; one brother, O.M. Kirkeby and one sister, Mrs. Florence Lynne, both of Clarkfield. Besides his wife and daughter, deceased was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Pauline and a brother, Julius.
