Clarence Otis Payne was born at Webster County, Iowa, on February 3, 1883. His parents were Charles and Julia (Olson) Payne. When he was three years old his father died and at the age of five, he made his home with his uncle, John Olson, who brought him up as their own son. Otis was baptized and confirmed by Rev. Gregerson at the Ulensvang Lutheran Church near Thor, Iowa. In 1901, he came with the family to Minnesota and settled in Tyro Township, Yellow Medicine County. On April 20, 1911, he was united in marriage to Oleva Lund. The union was blessed with four children: Geneva (Mrs. Selmer Emblem), Sheridan, Aletta (Mrs. Alfred West), all of Clarkfield, and Orville of Minneapolis. Mr. Payne spent his years farming in the Clarkfield area until two years ago when his health failed. He was a member of Clarkfield Lutheran Church for 60 years. Mr. Payne passed away on September 21, 1961, at his Clarkfield home, having reached the age of 78 years. Surviving are his children; four grandchildren, two foster brothers: Arnold and Clarence Olson of Clarkfield; five foster sisters: Mrs. Joseph Haaland of Owatonna, Minnesota, Mrs. Selma Mikelson of Spokane, Washington, Mrs. Laura Amdahl of Richmond, Californina, Mrs. Titus Ueland of Minneapolis and Mrs. Henry E. Johnson of Clarkfield; besides a number of other relatives and friends. Preceding him in death were his wife, who passed away in 1953; his parents, foster parents and the following brothers and sisters: Erma, Clara and Ed and one granddaughter, Marlene West.
