Obituary

Clarence Orian Combes was born August 19, 1877, at Montecello, Illinois, the second son of Henry and Martha (McKinley) Combes. When only six months of age, he together with his parents and a brother, Bert, moved to Iowa where he spent 56 years of his life. On January 14, 1903, he was united in marriage to Lola Maude Slaughter at Curleu, Iowa. On March 9, 1913, their home was brightened when Velma Lorraine arrived to make her home with them. She was three months of age. The couple began their married life on a farm in Minnesota where they lived two years and then returned to Iowa where they farmed at various points for 30 years. On March 1, 1939, they pruchased a farm three miles west of Boyd known as the Stratmoen farm, where they lived until moving to the home they purchased in Clarkfield in 1952. He retired, however, from farming in 1947. They lived in their Clarkfield home until the Clarkfield Nursing Home was completed and when that opened he and his wife were the first residents to move in. Mrs. Combes passed away in April of 1965. He entered his eternal rest on Monday, April 8, 1968, with his daughter and son-in-law at his bedside. He reached the age of 90 years. He is survived by his daughter, Lorraine (Mrs. Arnold Hilbert) of Decorah, Iowa; four grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; one brother, William H. Combes of Boise, Idaho; five sisters: Mrs. Mabel Ferguson of Laurens, Iowa, Mrs. Mattie Crow of Pine Island, Minnesota, Mrs. Anna Sibrel, Laurens, Iowa, Mrs. Clinton G. Gaylord, Ft. Collins, Colorado, and Mrs George Betts, Guthrie Center, Iowa. Ora, as he was known to his many friends, was always of a cheerful nature, even when confined to his bed, he had his usual bright, "Good Morning, how are you today?" cheerful greeting.
