Obituary

Cecilia Hedvig Hauge of 7500 York Avenue, Minneapolis, Minnesota, was born on May 18, 1905, to Dr. M.M. and Anna Hauge in Clarkfield, Minnesota. She was baptized and confirmed in the Norwegian Lutheran Church, now Clarkfield Lutheran Church. She graduated from Clarkfield High School in 1924 and attended the University of Minnesota in The School of Nursing. After graduating in 1929, she became Superintendent of Nurses at University of Minnesota Hospitals in 1934. During W.W.II, in the Army Nurses Corp. she served as Chief Nurse of the Base Hospital No. 26, spending the war years in England, North Africa, Italy, France and Germany. She served at Bari, Italy during the sinking of 18 hospital ships. On August 10, 1945, she was awarded the Bronze Star and left the service with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. She served as Chief Nurse of the Chicago Research Hospital in the Veterans Administration for several years. She was then called to Washington to become the National Director of the Veterans Administration Nursing Services, where she served for 12 years before retiring. She received the Special Commendation for Outstanding Achievement from the Regents of the University of Minnesota on February 28, 1957. She was most proud of being one of the few selected to receive the Florence Nightingale Award for Nursing from the French Ministry of Health. She is survived by a brother, Dr. Erling T. Hauge, wife Emiline, daughter Barbara Allen of Sun City W., Arizona; a sister, Bergliot Stueland of Clarkfield, Minnesota; a brother-in-law, Dr. Osmund Akre of Duluth, Minnesota, sons James of Reedsport, Oregon, Dr. Steven Akre of Great Falls, Montana; sister-in-law Evalyn Hauge of Clarkfield, Minnesota, daughter Anne Burgwald of Mountain View, California, sons Malvin of Clearwater, Florida and Dr. Chris Hauge of Gresham, Oregon; niece Laurel Goehl of Forest Lake, Minnesota; and nephew Paul Hauge of Clarkfield, Minnesota. Cecilia was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Dr. Malvin I. Hauge and Waldemar Hauge; one sister, Dagmar Akre; brother-in-law, Richard Stueland; and sister-in-law Elsie Hauge. Cecilia will be remembered with pride by her family for her achievements, excellence and example as an individual.
