Obituary

Mr. Carroll Peter Ness was born November 2, 1916, at home in rural McClusky, North Dakota, to Anton and Elise (Haugen) Ness. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. Carroll graduated from Mandan High School in 1934. He later attended North Dakota State College (later NDSU) majoring in Agriculture, where he was a member of the ROTC, member of a fraternity, and played football. He attended until March 1940 when he quit to be the executor of his father's estate and to support his mother and siblings. After his younger brother Paul returned from military service following WW II he returned to complete his undergraduate degree in 1947. He worked as a county commissioner in several counties in South Dakota before returning to Minnesota to farm at the home farm in rural Clarkfield. Carroll married Ruth Lucille Olson on June 28, 1949. To this union were born sons: Paul, Steven, Richard and Charles. Ruth and Carroll moved several times from rural Clarkfield, Minnesota, to several communities in South Dakota and then back to rural Clarkfield for 40 years. Carroll and Ruth also wintered in Mesa, Arizona, for 20 years. Carroll enjoyed living at Fieldcrest Assisted Living of Cottonwood, Minnesota, from 2002 to present. Carroll was a farmer/rancher during his youth, was county commissioner, then "old style" dairy farmer with cows, hogs, chickens, sheep, and horses for many years. Hobbies included playing with his kids, horses, playing and watching sports, card playing, golf, pool, bicycling, horse shoes, gardening and tending trees. He remained very active until his 85th year including frequently walking 18 holes of golf until his last year. One notable experience was traveling through the infamous Armistice Day blizzard of 1940 in a Model T truck with his future brother-in-law, Richie Olson. Carroll is survived by his children, Paul Ness and wife Mira of Manhattan, New York, Steven Ness of Maplewood, Minnesota, Richard Ness and wife Paula of Apple Valley, Minnesota and Charles Ness and wife Debra of Cottonwood, Minnesota; six grandchildren; brother Paul Ness; and sisters Evelyn Bauman and June Kvam.
