IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Carrie
Hovland
December 9, 1900 – October 29, 1995
Carrie Hovland was born December 9, 1900 in Paynesville, Minnesota, the daughter of Jens Oluf and Anna (Swennes) Hovland. She died at her farm home north of Minneota on Sunday evening, October 29, 1995 at the age of 94 years, 10 months, and 21 days. Carrie graduated Phi Beta Kappa from North Dakota State University at Fargo. She taught high school Home Economics at Canby. After her retirement from teaching, she became co-owner of the Hovland Nursery with her father, Jens Oluf Hovland, which she managed for half a century. She enjoyed Rosemauling, which she learned at the age of 70 and made many beautiful plates. She was an avid historian. Her interest in Norway was vast and she put out a genealogical history of the Hovland-Swennes line. She traveled to Norway five times and met many of her relatives there. Carrie served on the Board of the Norwegian-American Museum in Decorah, Iowa for 15 years. She was instrumental in raising enough money to have a Norwegian house circa 1840 rebuilt on the museum grounds. It is called the Valdnes House. Her sisters, Lillian Jensen and Mabel Weiby and half sisters Ida Gee and Bertha Levorsen, and half brother, Karl Hovland, preceded her in death. She is survived by many nieces and nephews and cared about the welfare of many! We are blessed to have known her.
