Carl Burke, a resident of the Clarkfield community for over sixty years, passed away in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on August 31, 1972, after an illness of about two years. Carl, the oldest of the twelve children of Adolph and Anna (Johnson) Burke, was born in Stanton, Iowa, on September 17, 1886. He was baptized on October 31, 1886, and was confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Dalesburg, South Dakota, on May 31, 1903. He and his family also lived in Wall, South Dakota. The Burke family moved to Clarkfield in 1910 and farmed just east of Clarkfield. They became members of what is now Augustana Lutheran Church. On February 25, 1920, he was married to Alice Peterson who passed away in December 1958. A daughter, Joanne, and a brother, Harry, also preceded him in death. Surviving children include Phyllis (Mrs. Robert Pecka) of Westfield, New Jersey, James of Monmouth, New Jersey, and Elois Jeanne (Mrs. Marvin Anderson) of Richfield, Minnesota. There are seven grandchildren: Paul Pecka, Susan Hipp, Barbara and Nancy Burke, Kathleen Gunderson, Kristen Fisher and Kari Anderson; one great granddaughter, Heather Gunderson; and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Burke's sisters and brothers include Mabel Anderson and Ethel Burke of Oak Park, Illinois, Esther Knutson and Elvera Lindborg of St. Louis Park, Minnesota, Irene Johnston and Bernice Lund of Rockford, Illinois, Elnora Budde of Slayton, Minnesota, Axel of Tuscon, Arizona, Roy of DeKalb, Illinois and Paul of Minneapolis.
