Obituary

Carl William Engel was born in Mecklenburg, Germany, October 11, 1878, the son of Carl William Engel and Sophie (Meyer) Engel. He was baptized in the Lutheran church in Germany. At the age of seven, he came to America with his parents, two sisters and a brother to reside in Benton County, Iowa. A short time later they moved to Ree Heights, South Dakota. In 1893 the family was forced to leave their farm when a prairie fire destroyed all their belongings. They then went to Rock County, Minnesota, to establish a new home. There Carl was confirmed in the St. John's Lutheran Church of Luverne, Minnesoa. On March 21, 1906, he was united in marriage to Miss Alvina Lorenz of Spencer, Iowa, to which union four sons were born. They farmed at Hardwick, Minnesota, and near Elkton, South Dakota. In the spring of 1914, they purchased a farm one and one-half miles east of Hanley Falls, Minnesota, where they resided until 1946, when they retired and moved into town. One year ago (April 8, 1956) the day of the funeral (April 8, 1957) an open house was given at the Yellow Medicine Lutheran Church in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Engel's golden wedding anniversary. Carl Engel enjoyed good health. However, the last few years he had been of failing health.
