Carl Jerome Carlson was born April 1, 1912, in Sandnes Township, rural Cottonwood, Minnesota, to Ingvald and Stella (Olson) Carlson. He was baptized and confirmed in the old Silo Lutheran Church of Cottonwood. Carl attended country school and worked on the family farm until April of 1941 when he was called into active duty with a U.S. Army artillery and anti-aircraft unit. He served in the Phillippine Islands on Leyte and Mindoro and earned a bronze star for his actions. He received his discharge in 1945 and returned home where he spent the rest of his years farming with his brother, Kermit, until his retirement. On June 22, 1980, at Christ Lutheran Church of Cottonwood, Carl was united in marriage to Marguerite Purdy Rickard. Carl died at his home in Cottonwood on Tuesday, January 1, 1991, at the age of 78. Carl was a member of the Christ Lutheran Church of Cottonwood, was past Commander and Drill Squad Leader of the Hanley Falls American Legion Post #127. After moving to Cottonwood, he transferred his membership to the Cottonwood American Legion Post #503, and he was also a member of the Granite Falls V.F.W. Post #3871. Carl loved to golf, fish and play cards. Surviving Carl are his wife, Marguerite of Cottonwood; his stepchildren, Randal Rickard and wife Jean of Marshall, Minnesota, Betty Lovness and husband Reed, Bonnie Knutson and husband Gordy and Joyce Warnke and husband Doug, all of Cottonwood; 11 grandchildren; four great grandchildren; one sister, Inez Abrahamson and husband Clarence of Wood Lake, Minnesota; three brothers, Kermit Carlson of Hanley Falls, Minnesota, Norman Carlson, and Stanley Carlson and wife Florence all of Apache Junction, Arizona; and many neices and nephews. Carl was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Arden.
