Bertha Charlotte
(Stweig) Heath
January 31, 1903 – January 1, 1999
Bertha Charlotte (Stweig) Heath was born January 31, 1903 at Kankakee, Illinois to John and Caroline (Bleiler) Stweig. In 1913 they moved to Redwood Falls, MN where they had bought a farm. In 1919 they returned to Illinois to be near their grandmother. In 1920 Bertha returned to Redwood Falls and worked at the hospital and took Nurses Training at night. She also took a corespondence course with the Chicago School of Nursing. In 1924, Bertha went to Rockwell City, Iowa to provide nursing for a friend. While there, she met and married Merton Heath. Merton and Bertha were married on October 8, 1924. The couple farmed for three years in Iowa and then moved to Redwood Falls to help her father farm. Merton, Bertha and their family moved to San Diego, CA following the war. Merton worked for the Federal Government and Bertha practiced nursing. She worked at an Army Camp as a civilian nurse for two years and at the Scripps Hospital for two years, until her health failed. The family returned to Redwood Falls, where she cared for her mother and Merton had a Taxi Service. In 1957 they returned to California. While in California they were members of the Church of Christ at Pacific Beach, where they were deacons. Bertha had been a resident at Valhalla Apartments in Clarkfield for many years. She recently moved to the Granite Manor, where she passed away on Friday, January 1, 1999 at the age of 95 years and 11 months. She is survived by her daughter Rose O'Keefe of Jensen, NE, four grandaughters, two grandsons, four great grandsons, and sister Rose Kueber and brother John Stewig. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Merton in 1970, son Dale, a sister and brother, and one nephew. Blessed be her memory.
