Bertha Marie Mauland was born May 3, 1870, at Time, Jaeren, near Stavanger, Norway, the son of Ola and Grethe (Kverneland) Lende. She was baptized into the Christian faith in the Time Church. At the age of nine years, she immigrated with her family to America, settling on a farm west of Cottonwood. She was confirmed at the Yellow Medicine Lutheran Church west of Hanley Falls by Rev. Knute Thorstenson. On December 27, 1890, she was united in marriage to Tollef Mauland at Silo Lutheran Church in Cottonwood by Rev. Thorstenson. They settled on a farm southwest of Cottonwood where she lived the remainder of her life except for ten years residence in the Normania community. To this union were born six children: Elizabeth (Mrs. Alfred Huso), Oscar, Conrad, Bernhard of Cottonwood, Reynold of Clarkfield and Grethe (Mrs. Henry Foss) of Echo. Mrs. Mauland passed away on Sunday, September 6, 1959, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Huso, at the age of 89 years, 4 months and 3 days. She was the last member of her family and one of the last pioneers in the St. Lucas community where she resided for almost 80 years. She is survived by her six children, thirteen grandchildren and twenty-six great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, who passed away in 1942, her parents, three brothers, four sisters, two sons-in-law, one daughter-in-law and two grandsons. IN MEMORY OF MRS. BERTHA M.
