Obituary

Bert J. Nelson, Lisbon Township pioneer, of Clarkfield, Minnesota, passed away December 20, 1969, at 8:00 p.m., at the Clarkfield Community Hospital, at the age of 88 years. He was born in Winneshiek County, Iowa, of parents, John and Julia (Stenson) Nelson. He was baptized by Pastor Moses in what was known as the Big Canoe Church, 13 miles northeast of Decorah, Iowa. In 1889, he came with his folks in a prairie schooner to Yellow Medicine County where the family bought railroad land in Friendship Township on the east edge of Clarkfield, until recently known as the Carl Burke farm. There they lived until the fall of 1884, when they moved to Lisbon Township, the northwest quarter of section 20, which has been the home of the family ever since. He was confirmed in the Trinity Lutheran Church of Boyd on November 7, 1897, by Pastor O.C. Farseth. In 1903, he moved to McLean County, North Dakota, and filed a homestead where he farmed for five years. After his father's death in 1908, he returned home and farmed together with his brother, Joseph, for the remainder of his life. His parents and two sisters preceded him in death. He leaves one sister, Mrs. Minnie Belz of Minneapolis and one brother, Joseph, at home, together with a host of cousins, relatives and friends to mourn his departure. IN MEMORY OF BERT J.
