Bert S. Berg was born October 6, 1863, in Bergen, Norway, of the parents, Sjure Bergesen Gjovaag and Anna Olsdatter. He was baptized and confirmed in the Tysnas church in Norway. At the age of 17, he came to America, arriving at Sanborn, Iowa, and then a little later, reaching Granite Falls, Minnesota, in July, 1881. Three years later he acquired the farm land in Hazel Run Township on which he built a home in 1890. On February 6, 1895, he was united in marriage to Ellen Otterness, who preceded him in death September 6, 1931. To this union were born eight girls and four boys, seven of whom survive, namely, Randi (Mrs. William M. Nelson), Mrs. Edna Nelson and Annie, all of Clarkfield, Minnesota, Clara (Mrs. Lee McMahon) of Swanville, Minnesota, Stewart of Granite Falls, Minnesota, Frances (Mrs. Arnold Mork) of Minneapolis and Julia (Mrs. Joel Stolen) of Boyd, Minnesota. Mr. Berg farmed until 1936 and led an active life in community affairs. He held various offices in the township and school district as well as in the Bergen Church where he served as deacon and was a member the past 65 years. He made his home with his daughters Edna and Annie in Clarkfield. After an illness of three weeks, he passed away at their home on Thursday morning, February 11, 1960, at the age of 96 years. Besides his immediate family, he leaves to mourn his departure, 21 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends. IN MEMORY OF BERT S.
