Bernice Meta (Hempel) Torke March 13, 1925~ October 1, 2015 Bernice Meta Hempel Torke was born to parents Ernest and Anna (Ulken) Hempel in Wood Lake Township, Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota, on March 13, 1925. She was one of 13 children. She was baptized at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Granite Falls and confirmed at the same church on May 5, 1940. She attended Hanley Falls School. Bernice and Otis C. Torke were united in marriage on December 14, 1941, at St. Paul Lutheran Church. They lived most of their farming years on the family Torke farm. They moved to West Prairie Apartments in Cottonwood in 2004 and to Hill Street Place in Marshall in 2010. She loved her family and enjoyed sharing photos of the children and grandchildren with her many friends. Bernice loved cooking, gardening and sharing the produce from their big gardens. She would feed anyone who came through her door. She was a member of the Hanley Falls Lutheran Church, the Buzzin Dozen Homemakers Club and took much pride in faithfully donating blood to the Red Cross Blood Mobile. Bernice passed away on Thursday, October 1, 2015, at the Avera Medical Center in Marshall at the age of 90 years, 6 months and 18 days. She is survived by her children: Orlen (Sande) Torke, Orrvin (LaVonne) Torke, Larry (Kathy) Torke, Wes (Ann) Torke, Christy (Brad) Beebout and daughter-in-law Sandy Torke. Also surviving are 24 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren; brother, Donald (Shirley) Hempel; and sister-in-law, Pearl Hempel. She was preceded in death by her husband Otis in 2013; son, Bruce Torke; daughter-in-law, Sherry Torke; and grandchildren: Lisa, Wade and David Torke. In Loving Memory of Bernice M.
