Obituary

Bernhard (Bernie) Mauland was born October 20, 1900, in Vallers Township, Lyon County, Minnesota, the son of Tollef and Bertha (Lende) Mauland. He was baptized and confirmed at Silo Lutheran Church of Cottonwood, Minnesota. Bernie graduated from Cottonwood High School in 1919 and went on to teach school in North Dakota until his marriage. On March 18, 1925, he was married to Nettie Louise Brenden. They farmed in the Normania Township, Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota area for several years and later farmed in Vallers Township. Bernie and Nettie moved to Cottonwood in 1954. After retiring from farming he did carpentry work which led into his hobby of wood carving. He enjoyed playing baseball and basketball and watching high school sports. His wife, Nettie, passed away March 8, 1983. In December of 1986 he entered the Minneota Manor, Minneota, Minnesota, where he resided until his death on March 21, 1990 at the age of 89 years and five months. Bemie is survived by his two sons, Burton and his wife Marion of Cottonwood, and Lyle and his wife Marion, Grand Forks, North Dakota; two grandsons, Jeffrey and wife Lynn and great granddaughter Sarah of Cottonwood, and Philip and wife Amy of Cottonwood; one granddaughter, Susan and husband Jim Kelton of Fairbanks, Alaska; and sister Elizabeth Huso of the Wabasso Nursing Home. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Nettie; three brothers, Oscar, Rey and Conrad; and one sister, Grethe.
