Obituary

Berneice E. Johnson was born May 2, 1921, at Pelican Rapids, Minnesota, to parents Erick and Carolina Johnson. She was baptized and confirmed at Central Lutheran Church of Pelican Rapids. She attended Country School through the 8th grade and graduated from Pelican Rapids Public High School in 1939. In her youth, she was very active in 4-H, proudly winning a trip to the Jr. National Livestock Show. Berneice attended Gustavus Adolphus College and graduated in 1943 with a degree in English and Music Education. While in college, she participated in numerous musical groups and as a soloist in her senior year. She was also active in Christian Youth Groups while in college. Berneice married Donald Schweer on March 10, 1943. They were the parents of four children: Craig, Teri, Brian, and Todd. Prior to coming to Clarkfield, Minnesota, she taught one year at Waldorf-Pemberton Schools and one year at Rapidan, Minnesota Public Schools. The family moved to Clarkfield in 1958 where she taught English until her retirement in 1982. Berneice was a member of Augustana Lutheran Church in Clarkfield and a member of the church WELCA. She was a past Worthy Matron of Eastern Star. She enjoyed her summers at her cabin on Lake Lida with her family and friends. She enjoyed reading, cooking, sewing, quilting, knitting, crocheting, and especially enjoyed her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Berneice passed away Monday, August 18, 2003, at the Clarkfield Care Center at the age of 82 years, 3 months and 16 days. She is survived by her children: Craig (Terri) Schweer of Montevideo, Minnesota, Teri (Tom) McCausland of Clarkfield, Brian (Bette) Schweer of Clarkfield, and Todd (Jeanine) Schweer of Marshall, Minnesota. Also surviving are grandchildren: Pati McCausland (Clarkfield), Michael (Joyce) McCausland (Lincoln, NE), Casey McCausland (Winona, Minnesota), Graham (Sarah) Schweer (Dublin, Pennsylvania), Erika Schweer (Ashland, Oregon), Katharine Schweer, Benjamin and Isaac Schweer (Clarkfield) and Claire Schweer (Marshall, Minnesota) and three great grandchildren: Cameron Faller, Duncan Marquart, and Murrin McCausland. She is also survived by one brother Berthel (Gladys) Johnson of Pelican Rapids, Minnesota, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Donald; step-grandson Michael Lundin; sisters Thyra, Effie, and Ruth; and brother Elrick.
