Obituary

Bengt E. Nelson was born in Skane, Sweden, on December 15th, 1865. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He lived with his parents until he had reached the age of 19 years. Then he left his homeland and came to America. When he arrived here he came to his brother's home at Sveadal, Minnesota. His education was secured at Gustavus College at St. Peter, Minnesota. He worked for a few years on farms in the Dakotas and Minnesota. In 1888 he returned to Sweden for a visit for a short period of time. On April 1, 1890, he was united in marriage to Miss Anna Nelson at Sveadal, Minnesota. The newly married couple moved to Swede Prairie Township, Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota, where they bought 200 acres of prairie land on which they established a home and where he lived for sixty years. During all this time he was a member of Swede Home Lutheran Church. To this marriage six children were born: Clara (Mrs. Frank Friber) of Boyd, Minnesota, Edward of Minneota, Minnesota, Sophie (Mrs. William Larson) of Minneota, Emily, Albert and Hilda at home. During his long residence in this community he served as a member on the school board, Co- operative Creamery, Co-op Oil Company and Farmers Elevator and was Chairman of the Local Board of Supervisors. Mr. Nelson passed away Friday, April 28, 1950, at the Marshall Hospital, Marshall, Minnesota. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1939. Surviving are his six children and one brother, Magnas Mattson of Minneapolis; and four grandchildren. He had enjoyed good health up until November, 1949, when he underwent surgery at the Asbury Hospital, after which he never fully regained his strength. On April 27th, he was taken seriously ill with a cerebral hemorrhage and was taken to the Marshall Hospital where he passed away on Friday, April 28th, at 8:15 p.m. at the age of 84 years, four months and 13 days. You have left this world of sorrow, and are free from pain and harm, And now rest in peace and comfort in the blessed Savior's arms. In all the world we shall not find A heart so wonderfully kind; So soft a voice, so sweet a smile An inspiration so sure, so deep A love so beautiful to keep. Blessed be his memory.
