Obituary

Basil Joseph Johnson, 89, passed away Friday evening, October 24, 1986, at Clarkfield Memorial Hospital, Clarkfield, Minnesota. Services were held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 28, 1986, at the Lynner Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Jay Norman officiating. Musical selections were by Mrs. Melvin Falkum and Mrs. Darryl Benson with Mrs. Benson accompanying on the organ. Casket Bearers were grandsons, Bradley, Bruce, Gregg, Jeff, Steve and Tom Johnson, Allen Osmundson, Mark and Terry Reiten. Final Resting Place is the Clarkfield Lutheran Cemetery, Clarkfield, Minnesota. He was born October 30, 1896, in Clarkfield to Edward and Mary (Hanson) Johnson. He was baptized and confirmed at the Clarkfield Lutheran Church. He was educated in the parochial and Clarkfield Public Schools and graduated from the U. of M. (Dept. of Army) Tech. College with honors. He married Geneva Oakland on October 30, 1919, at Granite Falls Lutheran Church with Rev. Ralstad officiating. He owned and operated the Johnson Tiling Co. until his retirement in 1960. They had eight children, Edward, Burnet (Mrs Alden) Aase and Gene of Clarkfield, Myrtle (Mrs. Richard) Osmundson of East Grand Forks, North Dakota, Orda (Mrs. Ardeen W.) Reiten of Minnetonka, Minnesota, Mentor of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Virginia of Los Angeles, California, and Robert who preceded Basil in death in 1976. At one time he was active in the Hauge Male Chorus and Clarkfield Lutheran Church Choir. He held past memberships in Clarkfield Lutheran Church and American Legion. He served in World War I and received an Honorable Discharge from the Army in 1919. He was an avid fisherman and loved gardening. He entered the Clarkfield Care Center on December 4, 1984, and resided there until he entered the hospital on Monday, October 20, 1986. He and Geneva celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary and his 89th birthday at the Care Center Octtober 30, 1985. He is survived by his wife, Geneva, seven children, 19 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Robert; his parents Edward and Mary; sister Myrtle Halverson Baldwin; brothers Torphin, Maurice, and Forest Johnson.
