Obituary

Avis Markell Kroger, resident of the Minneota Manor and formerly of Cottonwood, Minnesota, was born June 22, 1916, to Wilbur and Agnes (Gorman) Markell in Rush Lake, Saskatchewan, Canada. She moved with her parents to Green Valley, Minnesota, in 1924. She lived there until she married Edward Kroger on September 1, 1933. Her home was Cottonwood her entire married life. Edward and Avis were blessed with six sons. Avis worked as a waitress in all the Cafes in Cottonwood. She was a cook at the Cottonwood Public School for 11 years. She also did babysitting. She retired in 1990 after working as a custodian for 20 years at Christ Lutheran Church in Cottonwood. Avis loved people and especially children. She enjoyed going to volleyball, football, basketball and baseball games for over 40 years. She especially enjoyed seeing her grandchildren play. Avis liked to play cards. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. She was president of West Prairie Birthday Club and also on the Board of Housing and Redevelopment at West Prairie Apartments. Avis resided in Cottonwood living at West Prairie Apartments, Fieldcrest and then moving to the Minneota Manor in August of 2007. She passed away at the Manor on Saturday, March 29, 2014, at the age of 97 years, 9 months and 7 days. She is survived by her sons: Dick (Karen) of Worland, Wyoming, Ralph of Cherokee, Iowa, and Bill (Joyce) of Orlando, Florida. Also surviving are her daughter-in-law, Faye (Norman) Myers and many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren plus several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Edward; an infant son; sons: Jack and Philip; grandchildren: Darla Jenn Kroger and Jay Kroger; daughter-in-law, June Kroger; brothers: Bill and John Markell; and sisters: Marvel Jean Versluys, Maudie Markell and Margaret Sullivan.
