August Frederick Kahl was born January 27, 1880, the sixth of eight children born to Julius and Catherine (Kahl) Kahl, in Schleswig Holstein, Germany. He was baptized in infancy and attended school in Germany and also America. At the age of eight, he immigrated with his parents to America, settling near Doon, Iowa, where he farmed for several years. He married Julia McMulligan in 1901, at Guttenburg, Iowa. They were the parents of one adopted son, Walter. After three years of marriage, Mrs. Kahl passed away. In 1906 he married Mrs. Addie Curtis. He farmed at the Flandreu, Elkton and Philip communities of South Dakota for several years. Moving back to Doon, Iowa, he worked at the Farmers Elevator for a time, operated a theater and then a restaurant. Due to poor health, he found it necessary to retire. He died November 14, 1949, at the Clarkfield Community Hospital, Clarkfield, Minnesota, at the age of 69 years. He had been in the care of his niece, Martha (Mrs. Max Henke) of Wood Lake, Minnesota. Survivors include his son, Walter of South Saint Paul, Minnesota; sisters: Dora Kahl of Big Stone, South Dakota, Mrs. Christ Kahl of Big Stone City, Mrs. Caroline Boll of Verdi, Minnesota; brothers: Ernest of Ortonville, Minnesota, and William of Albert Lea, Minnesota. He was preceded in death by his brother, Henry, and his sister, Hannah. Funeral services were held November 18, 1949, in Doon, Iowa.
