Arthur Vernon Nielsen was born August 18, 1910 at Kankakee, Illinois to parents Soren and Marie (Olsen) Nielsen. The family moved to Martin County, Minnesota in 1913 and in 1923 moved to Yellow Medicine County. Arthur was confirmed at Clarkfield Lutheran Church and attended school in Clarkfield. He grew up on a farm about three miles west of Clarkfield. In 1935 he married Sadie Johnson and together they farmed on the Johnson homestead until 1957. To this marriage three children were born: Curtis, David, and a daughter, Margaret Ann, who died at birth. In 1957 they moved to Cour'd Alene, Idaho where Art worked at various jobs. In 1962 they moved to Westminister, Colorado where Art worked for the City of Westminister Water Department. He retired in 1975 and moved back to Minnesota, residing in Marshall for about two years and then moving to Clarkfield. Art passed away on Thursday afternoon, December 21, 1995 as the result of a pick-up/train accident in Clarkfield. He was 85 years, 4 months, and 4 days old. He is survived by his wife Sadie of Clarkfield and sons: Curtis (and Ann) Nielsen of Marshall, Minnesota and David Nielsen of Queensland, Australia, and six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, one brother, and daughter. Art loved to work in his gardens with the flowers and vegetables and kept his lawn neatly trimmed. In the winter he spent many hours in his basement workshop making projects out of wood. He loved a challenge. Another hobby of his was fishing in the Minnesota River and Lac qui Parle Lake with son, Curt. Blessed be his memory.
