IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Arthur Herman
Arneson
January 7, 1973
Arthur Herman Arneson was the sixth son born to Ole Tolef and Inger Tobiason Arneson of Decorah, Iowa. He and his twin sister, Alice, were born on January 12, 1893. His grandparents, Tolef Arneson Sanden, had immigrated from Naess, Halingdal, Norway, to Highlandville, Iowa in 1849. His father worked at the Lutheran Publishing House in Decorah. In 1904, the Arneson family moved to Chicago and lived for a time with Knute Rockne's parents when both O. T. Arneson and Mr. Rockne worked at "Skandinavian." During this time, O. T. Arneson translated many hymns from Norwegian to English for the hymnary under the name O. T. Sanden. Arthur graduated from LaFayette Grammar School and attended for a year, the Murray F. Tuley High School in Chicago. He then worked three years at the Continental and Commercial National Bank. In September, 1913, he returned to Decorah to attend the Lutheran Preparatory School and finished with a B. A. from Luther College in June, 1920. During World War I, he was in the navy and played in John Philip Sousa's band. In September, 1920, Arthur came to Clarkfield to teach at the High School and took a room at Selmer Mikelson's home. He played clarinet solos around the area accompanied on the piano by Selmer's sister, Sylvia, whom he married on August 8, 1923. After their wedding trip to Yellowstone Park, they lived in Madison, Minnesota, where at the Lutheran Normal School, for nine years he taught Latin, history, coached basketball and football, directed the orchestra and band and was Dean of Men. One son, Marcus Waldemar, was born to Art and Sylvia. During these years, he sold insurance in the summers. In 1931, when Peder Mikelson, Sylvia's father, died they moved back to Clarkfield to live with her mother. Art sold insurance full time. In 1938, he joined Lutheran Mutual Life Insurance Company and was one of their top salesmen. He represented them for over 25 years until his retirement. He has been an active member of the Clarkfield Lutheran Church serving as president of the congregation, a member of the Board of Deacons, as choir director, as superintendent of the Bible School and as a teacher of the Bible School Seniors. He has been active in the community affairs as Heart Fund chairman, Luther College Fund Drive, Chaplain of the American Legion, Red Cross and others. He has had diabetes since 1946. A severe stroke in 1964 curtailed many of his former activities. Since then, he has taken a special interest in witnessing his Christian faith in person and by letter to everyone he could. He had an extensive personal library devoted mainly to religious subjects and was widely read in this subject. Mr. Arneson died early Sunday morning, January 7, 1973, following two severe strokes on Friday and Saturday after being hospitalized since the first of November with diabetes problems and multiple smaller strokes. He would have been 80 on January 12th. He was well enough to be at the home of his son, Marc, and family in Wayzata, for Christmas. He is survived by his wife, Sylvia; one son, Marc, and his wife of Wayzata, Minnesota; one granddaughter, Corrine, Mrs. John C. Hawthorne and husband of Deephaven, Minnesota; three brothers: Clarence B. Arneson of Spokane, Washington, Robert I. Arneson of Portland, Oregon, and Edward E. Arneson of Elmwood Park, Illinois; and numerous nieces and nephews. IN MEMORY OF ARTHUR H.
