Arnold Ingfred Afdem was born in Clarkfield, Minnesota, to parents John E. and Belle (Brekke) Afdem, on February 21, 1895. He passed away at the Clarkfield Memorial Hospital on Monday morning, July 13, 1959, from a heart attack, at the age of 64 years, four months and 22 days. He was a member of Clarkfield Lutheran Church, having been baptized by Rev. O.C. Farseth and confirmed by Rev. O.T. Storaasli. He attended school at Clarkfield and later attended the University Agricultural College, St. Paul, and the Humboldt business college in Minneapolis. His early years were spent at home assisting with the farm work. At the beginning of World War I, he enlisted in the Navy on May 4, 1917, and was stationed at the Great Lakes naval School, later serving on the battleship Vermont. After having served 26 1/2 months in the Navy, he received an honorable discharge on July 21, 1919, and then returned to resume his farming operations at Clarkfield in which he continued until about five years ago when he retired because of ill health. He was married to Clara Lee of Clarkfield, on November 15, 1941, whom he left surviving to mourn his death. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Marvin, who passed away at the Granite Falls Hospital one year ago last January. Besides his beloved wife, Clara, he is survived by one brother and three sisters, namely, Edwin O. Afdem of Clarkfield, Annie M. (Mrs. I.F. Fagerlie) also of Clarkfield, Hilda J. (Mrs. C.D. Grinnells) of Raleigh, North Carolina, and Gladys V. (Mrs. Arnold G. Mikelson) of Minneapolis; his sister-in-law, Mrs. Marvin Afdem of Granite Falls, Minnesota; besides nieces, nephews and other relatives. Deceased was a quiet and home-loving man, a kind and devoted husband and loyal to his many friends by whom he will be sadly missed. IN MEMORY OF ARNOLD I.
