Anton A. Selness was born near the city of Namsons, Norway, August 1, 1865, a son of Andreas and Indiana Selness. His parents, brothers and sisters have all preceded him in death. He came to this country in 1885 at the age of 20 years, coming direct to Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota. Mr. Selness took up farming as his life work and operated a farm in Friendship Township until the year 1934, when he retired and moved to Minneapolis. There he resided until his death April 23, 1950. A member of the Spring Creek Lutheran Church of rural Clarkfield, until leaving the community, Mr. Selness was active in church work and acted as precepter for several years. Twice married, Mr. Selness' first wife, Ingeborg (Berg) died in 1898, leaving three children: Helmer, Engvald and Amanda (Mrs. Dithloff Varpness). In 1900, he married Mathilda Albrichtson, to which union the following children were born: Joseph, Lydia, Millie, Phillip, Alfon, Violet, Leif, Ordell, Pearl and Palmer. Joseph died in 1932 and Millie died in 1946. Anton Selness passed away at 7:00 p.m. on April 23, 1950, aged 84 years, eight months and 23 days, at his Minneapolis home. Surviving him in addition to the above named children are six grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
