Obituary

Anton A. Rexstad was born August 10, 1863, in Hadeland, Norway, the son of Anders and Ingeborg (Nilsdatter) Rexstad. There he was baptized in the Lutheran faith. He came to this country with his parents and two sisters when he was five years old. They came by sailboat on an eleven week voyage. Traveling by railroad, cattle train and river boats, they finally reached Fillmore County, Minnesota. In the spring of 1876 they left by covered wagon for Yellow Medicine County and homesteaded a farm near Clarkfield, where he spent his early youth. He was confirmed by Rev. Knute Thostenson in Bergen Lutheran Church. On May 30th, 1837, he was united in marriage to Margit Foss, and they established their home on their farm in Lisbon Township, residing there until 1895, when they moved to Boyd, where he was engaged in the elevator business for 19 years. Here he was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. In the spring of 1914 he moved back again to the old homestead in Lisbon Township where he lived until the fall of 1922, when he moved to Clarkfield. Mr. Rexstad was best known in the Clarkfield community for his many years activity as a thresherman. For over half a century his rigs, from horse-power through steam and gasoline tractor periods, threshed out grain on farms circling Clarkfield. He was a member of the Clarkfield congregation and loved to go to church as long as he was able. Mr. Rexstad always enjoyed excellent health until last spring when his health began to fail. He entered Clarkfield Community Memorial Hospital September 17, 1950, and later was moved to Russell Rest Home in Willmar, where he passed away Wednesday evening, November 8th, 1950, at 9 p.m. He is survived by his daughter, Alice (Mrs. Clarence Lund) and a son, Almer Rexstad of Madison, Minnesota; two grandsons: Almer Rexstad, Jr., of Wyoming, Iowa, and James Lund of St. Olaf College, Northfield; and one great granddaughter. One sister, Caroline (Mrs. Thorvald Moen) also survives. Preceding him in death are his wife and one grandson, his parents and one sister, Mrs. Mons Anderson.
