Anton Melvin Nelson was born on December 21, 1916, in Kanabec County, Minnesota, to parents Nils M. and Alma (Erickson) Nelson. He was baptized as an infant and later confirmed. Anton attended schools in Clarkfield and Boyd, Minnesota. He entered the United States Army on April 30, 1942, at Ft. Snelling, Minnesota. He served in the Aleutian Islands and received an Honorable Discharge on October 23, 1945, at Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Anton returned to the Boyd area and worked at various jobs including bridge work, NSP in Granite Falls, Minnesota, and also at AMPI in Clarkfield and Dawson, Minnesota. Anton married Esther Brovald of Clarkfield on August 2, 1948, at Day County, South Dakota. Their marriage included three children: Allen, Diana, and Donna. Esther passed away in 1970. "Tony" lived in Boyd, where he loved playing cards and attending the Senior Citizens. He liked to fish and enjoyed spending time with his family and especially his grandchildren. Anton passed away on Sunday, March 5, 2000, at the Johnson Memorial Hospital in Dawson, Minnesota, at the age of 83 years, 2 months, and 14 days. He is survived by his children: Allen (and friend Sue) of Sacred Heart, Minnesota, Diana Moen of Hazel Run, Minnesota, and Donna (and Ken) Nelson of Boyd. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Nicole Nelson, Jeremy, Dawn, and Amber Moen, and Kenneth and Joseph Nelson; and sisters Ethel (Dale) Leenerts of Montevideo, Minnesota, and Mae Strand of Jackson, Minnesota; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Esther; and sisters: Irene Iverson, Alice Nilson, Gena Fanter, Edith Clausen; and brothers: Marriam, Evert, Harold, Lloyd; and son-in-law Jerry Moen.
