Obituary

Anna Kristine Schjelderup was born on August 21, 1875, at Forsaa on the Fysfjord, Nordland, Norway. She was the oldest of nine children born to Cecilia Hedvig Winther Schjelderup and Willats Bing Schjelderup. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Tysfjord. Her childhood was spent at Forsaa in the harsh climate of northern Norway. She was eleven years old when she assumed the responsibility of raising her brothers and sisters, due to the sudden death of her mother. She suffered a tragic loss again in the death of four brothers and sisters in a scarlet fever epidemic. Her father, a brother and a sister were drowned in a sudden storm that overtook them as they were crossing the Tysfjord on a Sunday morning on their way to confirmation class. In 1893, at the age of 18, she came to America and worked in Brooklyn for about a year. She returned to Norway for a short time, later returning to Brooklyn. She came to the home of her Uncle Fyvind in northern Minnesota and from there went to Minneapolis where she was employed at Augsburg College. While there she me Malvin M. Hauge, a young medical student. They were married on April 4, 1903. Then began four lean years as the young couple was determined that he complete his medical education. In 1907, they came to Clarkfield with their two children where they at last found their permanent home. Years and years of struggle followed as she often found herself alone with her growing family. Long nights of worry followed while her husband was out in storms and blizzards of the Minnesota prairie. Her task was to tend fires of the home while her husband tended to the ills and needs of he growing community. Loneliness she knew the year he spent furthering his medical knowledge in Vienna, Austria, and during the time her husband battled the flu epidemic of 1918. Happy long years they were as her husband helped head the fight for school consolidation and as he became well known for his music. They both realized their dream when the local hospital was founded in 1931. During the worst years of the depression, she took care of the hospital laundry, mended, canned, and had the satisfaction of seeing the young institution grow and prosper. In 1940, she was left a widow in the death of her husband. She continued to live in the home he had provided for her, continuing to be the hub and anchor of her devoted family. Though faling gradually in health, she kept corresponding with a very large circle of relatives and friends. Her mind was alert and keen and she was very interested in all world current events. Her last Christmas was an especially happy one when her entire family, grandchildren and great grandchildren, were home with her, including her brother and sister from Minneapolis. On February 14, 1962, the final chapter of a dedicated life was completed and she passed away at 3:30 a.m., at the age of 86 years. She was a long time member of the Clarkfield Lutheran Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Malvin M. Hauge, her parents and six brothers and sisters. She is survived by her sister, Hildur and brother, Sigurd of Minneapolis, half-sister, Wilma and half- brother, Johann of Trondheim, Norway; six children: Malvin, Cecelia, Waldemar, Erling, Bergliot, and Dagmar; nine grandchildren: Anne, Malvin, Christopher, Barbara, Mark, Laurel and Paul Hauge, Steven and James Akre and three great grandchildren: Kristine, Kathryn and Heidi Hauge.
