Andrew J. Long, a son of Asa and Rebecca Virginia (Hines) Long, was born August 6, 1870, at Marion County, Iowa. He spent his childhood in his native community where he attended school. Later he moved with his parents to Guthrie County, Iowa. He was united in marriage with Millie Adelia Reed, July 3, 1890. To this union six children were born, three girls and three boys: Pearl (Mrs. Henry Ernst), Devota Walls, and Murvel (Mrs. Everette Loomis) and Melville, Orville and Boyd. He was engaged in farming in Iowa until 1911, when the family moved to a farm they purchased in Normania Township, Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota. They retired from farming and moved to the village of Clarkfield March 10, 1937. He was baptized by Pastor Charles Adee August 19, 1939, and was a member of the Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife; one son, Orville; a son-in-law, Elmer Hermon Walls; a granddaughter, Fayette Loomis; three great grandchildren, Irwin Berkvam, Brian Johnson and Leslee Thostenson; his parents; ten brothers and sisters: William, Rachel Walls, Powell, Mary Hall, John , Lettie Warner, Jacob, Charles, Cora Bailey and Martha Bailey. He is survived by five children, 18 grandchildren, 43 great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Margaret Shroyer of Panora, Iowa; and one brother, Frank of Creston, Iowa; and a host of other relatives and friends. He made his home with his youngest daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Everette Loomis, where a daughter, Mrs. Devota Walls, also makes her home and helped care for her aged father. On October 23, 1961, he was moved to the Clarkfield Community Hospital where he passed away peacefully November 7, 1961, at the age of 91 years. IN MEMORY OF ANDREW J.
