Amanda Varpness, 91, died at the Chippewa County Montevideo Hospital, Montevideo, Minnesota, November 16, 1987, after suffering a heart attack a few days earlier. Services were held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, November 20, 1987, at the St. Lucas Lutheran Church, Normania Township, Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota, with Pastor John Christiansen officiating. Mrs. Sheldon Haaland served as organist and accompanied Mrs. Herbert Mauland and Mrs. Norman Anderson as they sang, "One Day at a Time" and "When Peace Like A River". Casket Bearers were her grandsons: Bryan Varpness, David Varpness, Douglas Varpness, Jerry Varpness, Lawrence Varpness and Wesley Varpness. Final Resting Place is St. Lucas Church Cemetery, Normania Township, Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota. She was born on a farm south of Clarkfield, Minnesota, on May 7, 1896, to parents Anton Selness, who was born in and came from Norway and Ingeborg (Berg) Selness, who was born in Minnesota. She was baptized and confirmed at the Spring Creek Lutheran Church, Swede Prairie Township, Yellow Medicine County, by Pastor O.T. Storaasli. On June 18, 1917, she was united in marriage to Dithloff J. Varpness. They had five children, three of who survive, namely; Delmar of Clarkfield, Alice (Mrs. LeRoy) Johnson of Boyd and Jimmie of Clarkfield. Twin sons died in infancy. She is survived by her three children; daughters-in law, Marion and Rose of Clarkfield; son-in-law LeRoy Johnson of Boyd, Minnesota; 13 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; brothers Phillip Selness of Santa Paula, California, Alphon Selness of Minnetonka, Minnesota; and sisters, Lydia Tingvold of Ebenezer Caroline Center, Minneapolis, Minnesota, Violet Carhart of Crystal, Minnesota, and Pearl Grosberg of St. Paul, Minnesota; nieces; nephews; and cousins. Preceding her in death besides her twin sons are her husband; grandson Duane Varpness; parents; and brothers, Helmer, Ingvold, Joseph, Leif, Ordell, Palmer; and sister Millie.
