Obituary

Alyce J. Mathis, 94, died Monday, May 12, 1986, at the Clarkfield Care Center. She was born Alyce Jophelia Hanson on March 3, 1892, at Milton, North Dakota, to Ole and Helga (Trovaten) Hanson, who the following year moved back to the Hanson home farm at Hanley Falls, Minnesota. She was confirmed in the Yellow Medicine Lutheran Church of Hanley Falls, Minnesota, in the Norwegian language and then received some training in millinery work. For many years she was employed in various places - Minnesota communities of Clarkfield, Dawson, Granite Falls, and in Harvey and Minot, North Dakota. In 1937 she moved to Los Angeles, California, where she worked and lived until 1983. An active member of the Church of the Open Door, she was always supportive of the mission work there. In 1960 she married Edward Mathis, and she has been a widow since 1970. After a stroke in 1983, she entered the Clarkfield Care Center where she lived until her death. Alyce was always an optimistic person probably because of her deep faith and her great love of God. She traveled extensively and was a "people person", keenly interested in family and friends, and especially children. As the last surviving member of her family, she is remembered with great affection by her ten nieces and five nephews and their children. Two local nieces are Mrs. Myrtle Benson of Granite Falls, Minnesota and Mrs. Joan Oftedahl of Hanley Falls, Minnesota. Services were held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 14, 1986, at the Lynner Funeral Home with Rev. H. N. Schey officiating. The organist was Elsie Carlson with soloist Thoralf Benson. Special music was "Beautiful Saviour" and "Onward Christian Soldiers." A tribute was given by Myrtle Benson. Casket Bearers were Vernon Hanson, Allen Riley, Paul Riley, Gene Oftedahl, Thoralf Benson and Stewart Berg. Final Resting Place is the East Yellow Medicine Luthern Cemetery in Hanley Falls, Minnesota. A TRIBUTE TO AUNT ALYCE Aunt Alyce was a very special lady. She always had a kind word with a smile. She saw only the best in each of us. Making us feel so much more worthwhile. She dearly loved her nieces and nephews. To us many family stories would she tell; Her keen memory knew each of our birthdays For these she always remembered us well. Yes, for 94 years she loved living! Her church was especially dear to her heart. She quietly witnessed and served our Lord Making sure she always did more than her part. We, her family, will miss her greatly She touched each of us in a most unique way. We'll treasurer the many precious memories of her. God took her home as she quietly slept away. -Myrtle J.
