Alice Ione Johnson was born April 25, 1928, on a farm south of Clarkfield, Minnesota, to parents Dithloff J. and Amanda (Selness) Varpness. Alice married LeRoy A. Johnson on February 9, 1947. They raised four daughters and farmed west of Clarkfield. LeRoy and Alice moved to Montevideo, Minnesota, in the late 1990s. She loved music! She played several instruments by ear, including the piano, guitar, melodica, and accordion. She taught Sunday School for many years and was an active member of the Ladies Aid of Augustana Church. She enjoyed gardening and canning, most of it done while they lived on the farm. She also enjoyed quilting, crocheting and sewing. Alice passed away on Sunday, May 25, 2008, at the Ren-villa Care Center in Renville, Minnesota, at the age of 80 years and 1 month. She is survived by her husband LeRoy, of the Ren-villa Care Center; and her children: Carol Roozen of Rogers, Minnesota, Diane (Dale) Nelson of Northfield, Minnesota, Judy (Peter) Stuber of Brownsville, Minnesota, and Elaine (Lynn) Erickson of Montevideo, Minnesota. Also surviving are her grandchildren: Stuart (Erin) Roozen, Amy McDaniels, Paul (Renee) Nelson, Michael (Nicole) Nelson, Tammy (Bill) Schmitz, Terresa (Dave) Bubbers, Jeremy (Melissa) Erickson, Joshua (Alison) Erickson; 16 great grandchildren; brother Jimmy (Rosann) Varpness of Marshall, Minnesota; and sisters-in-law Marion Varpness of Clarkfield and Evelyn Walter of Montevideo, Minnesota; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Delmar Varpness and son-in-law Bill Roozen. Blessed be her memory.
