Alice Marie (Droen) Smith was born December 12, 1916, in Lisbon Township of Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota, to Lewis and Alma (Anderson) Droen. She was baptized, confirmed and a lifelong member of Clarkfield Lutheran Church. She attended school in Clarkfield and graduated in 1934. She married Harold Smith June 20, 1942. Harold and Alice farmed her family farm and she was employed for a time at the Clarkfield School as a secretary. She then moved into banking, insurance and real estate sales for 38 1/2 years. Alice was of help to many people through her work with guardianships, estates and personal finance. Alice loved her family and extended family and enjoyed baking bread, delicious caramel rolls and "Norwegian goodies". A person never left her home without "a little lunch". She was an avid gardener and loved any type of outdoor work, especially trimming trees with a chain saw!? As grandchildren came along, they spent many hours with Alice and Harold. They were proud grandparents who loved being an important part of their grandchildren's lives. Alice suffered a stroke in October of 1996 and recovered enough to live in her home with the aid of Mavis Odegard of Montevideo and Julie Willander of Clarkfield. Alice entered the Clarkfield Care Center in August and passed away on November 6, 2000, at the age of 83 years, 10 months, and 24 days. She is survived by her children: Richard and friend Bonnie Hemingson, Harry and Pam Smith and Mary and Mickey Hegna; grandchildren: Michelle and Eric Norsten, Michael West, Matthew, David and Aaron Smith, and Sarah and Susanna Hegna; and great grandsons: Jordan, Austin, Garrett and Derek Norsten; sisters-in-law: Betty (Andrew) Droen of Minnetonka, Minnesota, Florence (Marvin) Bruns of Minneota, Minnesota, Bea (George) Silver of St. Paul, Minnesota, and Margaret (Bill) Smith of Madison, Minnesota; and brother-in-law LeRoy (Pansy) Elliot of Las Vegas, Nevada; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother Andrew; and her husband Harold who died July 16, 1991. Blessed be her memory!
