Agnes M. Melbostad, 87, of Clarkfield, Minnesota, died Monday, April 29, 1985, at the Clarkfield Care Center after a short illness. Services were held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, May 3, 1985, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Owatona, Minnesota. They were conducted by Rev. Raymond Haugland. Graveside services were held Saturday, May 4, 1985, 2:00 p.m. at the Clarkfield City Cemetery, Clarkfield, Minnesota, with Pastor Gordon A. Trelstad officiating. She was born near Webster, South Dakota, to Thron and Ingeborg (Cornelius) Melbostad on November 21, 1897, and moved with her family to Clarkfield when she was about three years old. The family then moved to Boyd, Minnesota, and she was confirmed at the Trinity Lutheran Church and graduated as valedictorian from the high school. She was a registered nurse, graduating in 1920 from St. Luke's Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota. Her early career included night supervisor at St. Luke's, special nursing in Hot Springs, Arkansas, further education in Fort Collins, Colorado, and the University of Minnesota - from which she received her certificate in public nursing in 1923. After a three-year stint as college nurse at Mankato Teachers' College, she joined the staff at Owatonna High School as school nurse and continued in that capacity until retirement in 1963. She served as Steele County nurse for about a year and entered the Blooming Prairie School system as nurse for another two years. During her 37 years as Owatonna School Nurse her concern for good health and the care of others was manifested in many ways. She helped with innovative programs such as hot lunch, milk, vision, hearing, dental programs, Mantoux testing, pre-school roundups and immunization clinics. The Remidial Fund was implemented by Melbostad and she taught the Red Cross Home Nursing Classes to adults and to students in the Home Economics Department for many years. She was a member of the MEA and the NEA; state and national Nursing and Public Health Division and served on the Nurses Board of the 13th Nurses District; the Steele County Red Cross Chapter; was a life member of the Parent Teachers Association and was active on the committee to help start the Mental Health Center in Owatonna. She was honored by the Owantonna community for her many civic contributions and was presented a commemorative watch. Her name was listed in the 1958-59 Who's Who in Minnesota and earlier she received national recognition from Loyola University for an article entitled, "Working Together for School Health," written by her in 1939 and published in The Journal of School Health. In 1971, the Owatonna Exchange Club presented her with the "Book of Golden Deeds" for years of service and in 1973 she was named one of the Top Senior Citizens in Steele County. She is survived by sister, Mrs. Hilda Vick of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; 13 nieces and nephews; and numerous grand nieces and grand nephews.
