IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Adolph Melvin
"Shorty" Nelson
June 28, 1885 – October 27, 1969
Adolph Melvin Nelson was born June 28, 1885, to Nels and Sarah (Lyngen) Nelson of the Village of Clarkfield. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and spent most of his entire life in Clarkfield. Adolph was the oldest citizen born within the village of Clarkfield. He was baptized in the village square before any churches were built. "Shorty's" childhood was short lived because of the early death of his father, at which time he entered into the restaurant business with his mother. November 7, 1908, he was united in marriage to Mabel Cliffgard and to this union six children were born, all of whom survive. In his lifetime, he labored at many jobs to support his family in those troubled times. After leaving the restaurant business with his mother, he became the manager of the Security Elevator at Hazel Run. Opportunities opened up in Canada where he lived for a brief time and then returned to Clarkfield, again operating a restaurant for six years. In 1920, he took over the operation of the Clarkfield Hotel. In 1922, he went to work for Mr. Earl Gough who had started a trucking business. He worked with him for 27 years until his retirement. Shorty loved music and was one of the charter members of the Clarkfield Male Chorus, organized in the early nineteen hundreds, under the direction of Dr. M.M. Hauge. He sang with this group almost to the time it was discontinued. He also played the bass horn in the Hazel Run Band. He was a charter member of the Clarkfield fire department and worked with many other Civic and Social groups of this village. Adolph is survived by his wife, Mabel and six children: Abigail, (Mrs. Robert Wood) of Minneapolis, Merald of Hopkins, Lloyd of Minneapolis, Donald of Clarkfield, Dora (Mrs. Carl Hanson) of Hopkins, and Diana (Mrs. Arvey Hanson) of Clarkfield; 19 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren.
