Abner Burnill Smolley died June 10, 1987, at the Chippewa County Montevideo Hospital at the age of 73 years. Today (the 13th) would have been his 74th birthday. Abner was born June 13, 1913, in Clarkfield, Minnesota to Andrew Frank and Annie Gjertina (Droen) Smolley. He was baptized and confirmed at the Clarkfield Lutheran Church, where he had been a lifetime member. On February 2, 1952, Abner married Shirley May Claggett at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Montevideo, Minnesota. To that union two children were born, Patricia Gayle and James Burnill. Abner loved life on the farm, he was active in church responsibilities and activities until his stroke in 1976. In earlier years he sang in the Hauge Male Chorus. Abner enjoyed fishing, camping, sports, and he loved spending time with his family and grandchildren. He is survived by his wife Shirley, daughter Patricia, son James, daughter-in-law Gail, and his three grandchildren, Krystal, Amber, and Jordan; his sisters, Evelyn Brock of Clarkfield, Lillian Palmgren of Madison, Minnesota, Norma Jacobson of Hanley Falls; his brother Donald Smolley of Park Rapids, Minnesota; and many nieces and nephews. Abner was prededed in death by his parents, brothers Calmer and Jay, and sister Sadie. Abner will be buried in the Clarkfield Lutheran Cemetery. Blessed be his memory.
