Charlotte Hoff Obituary

Charlotte Hoff was 97 years old when she died on June 30, 2019 at her home in Grand Arbor Assisted Living in Alexandria after suffering a major stroke.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 6, 2019 at 11:00 AM at St. Lucas Lutheran Church, rural Cottonwood.  Rev. John Martinson will officiate and interment will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be held for one hour before the services on Saturday at the church.  Arrangements are with Lynner Funeral Home in Clarkfield.

Charlotte Lucille (Hanson) Hoff was born at home in Swede Prairie Township, on May 16, 1922 to Orville and (Gudrun) Maria (Gudmundson) Hanson.  She grew up on the family farm in Swede Prairie Township near Clarkfield, MN along with brother Howard, and sisters Bertha and Una Marie.  Although she was a life-long member of St. Lucas Lutheran Church, Charlotte was baptized in her mother’s home church, Westerheim Icelandic Lutheran Church, rural Minneota, MN as St. Lucas was rebuilding after a fire. She and her future husband, Joe, were confirmed at St. Lucas, members of the same confirmation class.  She was a Sunday School teacher and active in Ladies Aid at St. Lucas for many years.

Charlotte attended District #86 Country School, and graduated from Clarkfield High School on June 2, 1939.  She attended Teachers’ Training (Normal School) in Montevideo with her sister, Bertha, then taught Country School, ultimately returning to teach at District #86.

On June 11, 1944, Charlotte married Joseph (Joe) Eugene Hoff at St. Lucas Lutheran Church, rural Cottonwood.  A few months after their wedding, Joe entered the U.S. Army and served in  Guam and the Marianas during World War II.  After the war, Joe and Charlotte farmed near his parents, then ran the Spring Creek Country Store for five years, selling groceries, seed corn, livestock feed, and hosting outdoor drive-in movies in the backyard as they began their family.  In 1955, the Hoffs moved to Charlotte’s mother's farm, so Charlotte could help sister Bertha care for their mother, who had suffered a massive stroke and required constant care.  Here Joe and Charlotte raised their four children, a daughter, Kathryn, and three sons:  Joe, Robert, and Donald. After Charlotte’s mother died and the children were grown, Charlotte worked as a certified nursing assistant at the Minneota Manor Nursing Home for 13 years, a job she really enjoyed.  Charlotte also served as treasurer for Vallers Township and was a member of the Vallers Sewing Club.

After Joe’s death, Charlotte and her sister Bertha continued to live on the farm for a while, then moved to West Prairie Apartments in Cottonwood.  After Bertha died, Charlotte continued to live at West Prairie for some years.  In August 2017, Charlotte moved to Grand Arbor in Alexandria to be near her daughter.  She enjoyed life at Grand Arbor and had lots of company.  Charlotte loved music, sports, news and politics, and family history.  She was very sociable, making new friends at every stage of life.  She especially enjoyed visits from family members and was proud to say she knew each of her 15 great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her daughter, Kathryn (Ken) Rothman, Alexandria, MN; sons: Joe (Ann), Albany, MN, Robert (Teresa), Wood Lake, MN and Don, Stillwater, MN; six grandchildren: Rebecca (Patrick) McCoy, Jesse (Michelle) Hoff, Jennifer (Ralph) Keen, Jonathan (Jessica) Rothman, Angela (Brian) Nyp, and Kristen Gray; 15 great-grandchildren:  Alyssa, Joseph, Joshua, Katelyn, Evan, Emma, Tyler, Sydney, Ryleigh, Wyatt, Pyper Jo, Aden, Gavin, Mason, and Morgan; a sister-in-law, Shirley (David) Javens; her best friend Beulah Anderson; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Charlotte was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Joe; and siblings: Howard, Bertha, and Una Marie.
