L. Sherman “Shermie” Winson was born on May 26, 1932, during the worst dust storm of the year to Clarence and Sylvia (Gunderson) Winson at their home in the Lac Qui Parle Village area. His aunt Florence (Winson) Sandager was there to catch him and would brag that she was the first one to hold him. He graduated from Clarkfield High School and attended Dunwoody College of Technology and obtained a degree in Machine Tool Technology.
Shermie was married to Burdonna (Bruflat) and they had three sons—Scott, Don, and Michael. In 1971, he married Joyce Thompson who had one son, Christopher. Although he did many things, his heart was always in farming. His other passions were fishing, hunting, and music.
Shermie passed away on Sunday, December 31, 2023, at the Clarkfield Care Center at the age of 91. He is preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Sylvia; son, Michael Jon; brother, Richard, and sister, Audrey McCoy.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Joyce; sons, Scott, Don (Brenda) Winson, and stepson, Chris (Marsha) Thompson; grandchildren, Eric, Justin (Alaina), Jarrid, and Kirby Winson, Christina (Bob) Lemke, Amber and Conrad Thompson, and Delsie and Delicia Lynne; great-grandchildren, Soren Winson, Carlie Eliason, Aubrey Gilb, Tasha Niskanen, Gage and Makaylee Haraldson; nephews, Mickey, Pat (Joyce), and Kenny McCoy, and niece, Christine Winson.
In accordance with Shermie’s wishes, no funeral service will be held, and donations can be made in his memory to the Clarkfield Area Community Foundation (CACF) or the Clarkfield Community Library.
